Coolest Ben 10 Cake

I made this Ben 10 Cake for my stepson’s fourth birthday. He is obsessed with all things “Ben 10″ and I was determined to give him an amazing cake for his themed birthday party. Having never made a decorative cake or worked with fondant before, I was nervous as to how the cake would turn out, but I just had fun, got artistic and went for it.

I used one 14″ round cake for the bottom tier, and stacked two 12” cakes for the top. The cake was huge, and we had tons left over! …rookie mistake, ha ha! I bought fondant from Michael’s (Duff brand), and colored it with Wilton gel colors (using gloves!). I covered the bottom tier with fondant, used a few wooden dowels to support the second tier, then covered it with fondant as well. I found star cookie cutters in different sizes and used them to cut the fondant stars on the cake. The stars and lettering were “glued” on to the cake with icing.

My husband and I found the alien characters at Toys r Us and the “swampfire” candle came from Party City. I used a star tip to pipe the bottom of both tiers (also found at Michael’s). I used a total of four boxes of cake mix, and three cans of frosting. (Milk chocolate super moist Dunken Hines cake mix and Duncan Hines cream cheese frosting-amazing combo, by the way!) Everyone loved the cake, but no one more than the birthday boy himself. He couldn’t stop looking at it and laughing, saying “it’s so cool!”. The adults thought it was awesome and were surprised it was home made (they even complimented me on having yummy fondant, and one said that cake that looks good usually doesn’t taste so good, but not in this case!).

The cake took about 6 straight hours to decorate (I did my baking and cooling the night before) and it was really exhausting but really fun, too! Hope you like it, our guy sure did!
