Coolest Blanket Birthday Cake

I made this Blanket cake for my daughter’s second birthday. When I was trying to decide on a cake, my husband said it had to be a blanket, because that’s her most favorite thing in the whole world!

I bought an 18″ doll with the same eye color and approximately the same hair color as my daughter. I arranged her on the cake plate so she could hold the blanket. She was taped down so she wouldn’t move when transported.

The cake was baked in a bowl, and then carved, allowing a few grooves at intervals, to accommodate the folds of the blanket. I covered the cake with a layer of butter cream.

I then made a blanket out of fondant. I rolled it out, cut it into a rectangle, then scored it with lines to make the checkerboard pattern. I picked up the blanket and draped it over the cake, making folds and pushing it into the grooves cut into the cake. It took a fair amount of hand smoothing to get it just right.

I then piped pink and white butter cream, using a dot tip, onto the fondant blanket, filling in each square of the checkerboard with alternating pink and white colors. Finally, the edges were finished with white butter cream and a ruffle tip. I moved the doll’s hand to look as if she was holding the blanket at the top.

We took this cake to her daycare on her birthday. Everyone, kids and adults, loved it! Abby also got to keep the baby doll afterwards.

  1. I’ve been looking all over the internet for the past couple days trying to find how to do this technique. Awesome cake! I’m going to attempt to do a checkerboard blanket over a cake with a teddy bear sitting on top for a baby shower cake! Thanks so much for the instructions on how to do the blanket! It has definitely given me some direction on creating the cake that’s been in my head for some time now! I’ll let you know how it turns out!!
