Here’s a Homemade Blue Dog Birthday Cake Design I made my stepdaughter for her 8th birthday. I used two 8″ round pans. I cut the face from one and the big ol’ ears from the the other. There was just enough to snack on for my wife and I while I constructed it. It seems like it always takes more icing for one of these cakes. I just spread the two colors on with a butter knife being real careful around the edges. We didn’t want it to look exactly like, “Blue” but did like the really bright teal color.
The accessories are leftover candy from the Christmas parade a few weeks prior. I rolled out the tootsie rolls for the ring around his eye, and the dots on his face, or I guess her face. The nose and eyes are a Hershey bar I carved with a serrated steak knife. And the tongue and bow are pieces of “extra” bubble gum flattened with a rolling pin and cut with kitchen shears.
She really loved it and wanted the nose for her piece. And other kids at her party wanted the middle with the tongue. After all the guests were gone, and the face was all but destroyed, I pushed the two sides together and smoothed the icing with a knife and “recycled” it’s face with a bag of small marshmallows for hot chocolate. The result was,”spazzy the rabbit” pictured also.
I don’t know any real tips to give about trying to recreate this here dog, but try drawing what you want to make first and I always use a knife dipped in warm water to smoother the icing. Everyone may already do that I just think it gives a real smooth look to everything.
