I started out with a picture of Lightning Mcqueen that I printed from online. I cut it out and placed it on the cake so I could cut around the edge. I did a crumb coat of frosting and then used a toothpick to draw his facial features (trying to duplicate the photo).
Because I could not get a true red colored frosting, we decided to make a blue Lightning Mcqueen. I outlined in blue over the areas I had traced with the toothpick, then filled in the body using my star tip. My son really likes the dirty Lightning Mcqueen that you can buy at the store, so we crushed up some Oreo cookies and dirtied him up a little. I used crushed Oreos for the wheels so that it would look like Lightning had been driving in the mud.
Overall, I’m pretty pleased with the way this Blue Lightning Mcqueen Cake Design turned out. If I had to do it again, I’d make my own frosting. I love the convenience of buying it in the tub, but the consistency was a little soft and the stars were a little droopy.
