Coolest Blue Toad Cake

One of my grandson’s was getting ready to celebrate his 6th birthday. He requested I make him Blue Toad for his cake. This was great fun. My grandchildren love to see if I can meet their requests, yet have to make sure they are tasty too.

I made two Dora Explorer cakes, one layer chocolate and one layer yellow. I used a little of the batter to make two mini cupcakes for the shoes, and one mini loaf pan for the arms (cut the loaf pan lengthwise to get the arms done). The blue circles are made from edible paper which can be purchased in the cake decorating aisles of many stores. Had great fun seeing this one come together nicely. My family does not care too much for fondant, so if I do use it I only do so for accents sometimes.

Almost always like to use a simple homemade butter cream icing. It works best if a little stiff, yet pliable enough to be able to push through the decorator tips. I always put a little icing on the plate I plan to put the cake on to make certain it stays in place. Seems to do the trick nicely.

Extra Tip:

If you feel the arms may not stay on the cake firmly you can place a small dowel rod through the cake (mid arm area) straight through making certain you’ve cut the rod prior to insertion to have the correct length and avoid any hanging out from the cake. Simple to remove when cutting the cake too.

My grandson was quite pleased with the results as were the guests he had at his party. Yahoo!!!
