I was trying to decide what kind of cake to make for my mom, who likes to work in her garden and whose favorite flowers are yellow roses. Lacking the skill to make presentable roses, I decided on a Butterfly Birthday Cake Idea on a yellow background.
The cake is just a boxed spice cake mix (mom’s favorite flavor), and the yellow icing is store bought cream cheese frosting tinted with gel. I made the butterflies a couple days in advance. The idea for them came from a cupcake decorating book I have. They are made from melting chips, which were piped out on to wax paper with the wing shaped traced on the back. Use a toothpick to draw the chocolate outline in to the orange area, sprinkle with white non pareils, and let them harden. I stored them in the fridge with no problems.
I piped on the chocolate icing branch for the butterflies to sit on, and placed an M&M under each wing half to give them dimension. Then, I piped a “body” with chocolate icing down the center of the two wing halves and added in a few small leaves. My mom really enjoyed the cake, and I was glad to do it for her.
I have that creative cupcake cookbook that tells you how to make the butterflies! LOVE IT! Made something similar for my daughter’s birthday! Nice job! :)
