This Butterfly Cake was for my kindergarten class’s reunion. Each year we set butterflies free so that was the theme of the party. I used three 9 by 13 inch rectangle vanilla cakes for the wings which I carved into the shape of the wings. I decided the shape of the wings by drawing out the shape and actually in the end, ended up turning then upside down from the original plan. I crumb coated the wings separately. A large chocolate cupcake was used for the head and a loaf pan for the body.
The wings were covered with blue icing and then the colours were piped on using a shell piping tip. The body was chocolate frosting which I piped on with a star tip and added chocolate chips in rows. There were jellybeans and more icing for the details on the butterfly wings. I used live saver gummies for the eyes and licorice rope for the antennas. I used Wilton gel colors to get such bright tones on the cake.
It was fun but a cake this large was hard to fit in the fridge for cooling and setting. Needless to say, the kids loved it.
