My daughter just turned 8 and she requested a Butterfly cake for her birthday. I looked into butterfly cake pans but they were so expensive so I searched the internet for other ideas. I found this site and someone showed a butterfly cake they had made using a heart shaped cake pan.
The idea was to use 4 heart shaped cakes and position them into the shape of a butterfly. That method made the butterfly way too big for me so I used 3 hearts and used the first two for the upper wings and then cut the 3rd heart in half for the lower wings. I cut the 3rd cake in half with a curve to create the look of wings and amazingly enough the middle piece that was left over fit perfectly down the center of the butterfly to make the body.
It was fun and easy! Hopefully I will have an opportunity to make it again someday!
I’m doing butterfly theme for me daughter’s first b-day and I too didn’t want to spend a bunch on a pan I may only use once. I did it your way with the heart pan (that I already owned) and it was perfect!
Amazing idea, just been commissioned to make a butterfly cake and now I’ve seen this idea can’t wait to get started!!!!
it’s beautiful!
what size of pan did you use?
did you bake 3 times then?
The method you used is terrific, I’m making a butterfly b/cake tomorrow for my granddaughters 8th… as she requested. I reckon your approach is the way to go, simple yet can be easily decorated. I’m also making a skateboard themed cake for my grandson’s 5th…. hopefully I’ll survive. Thanks for sharing.
Great idea. My granddaughter will be 6 in Sept so this is the cake I am going to do. I think I will use a lot of pastel colors (she is into pink and purple) for decoration.
Thanks for this. My daughter is 4 in a few weeks and have been researching butterfly ideas. This is the perfect template. Thank you very much. xx
Thank you for this posting I made this cake for my daughter’s 1st birthday and it was easy to make and looked great. I made 3 different flavours since I had to bake 3 cakes anyway.
