I decided to make my daughter a homemade butterfly birthday cake recipe for her 2nd birthday. Her theme was butterflies, so I thought it was fitting. I used a heart shaped Wilton cookie pan. I found this on sale the day after Valentines day. It is a chocolate cake mix.
I used swiss cake rolls for the body of the butterfly. I trimmed off the pointy ends of the hearts, and turned them to make the wings. I used buttercream frosting, tinted with neon food coloring. I frosted the entire cake with the 2 base colors, and let it harden a bit. I then drew a teardrop shape and cut it out of wax paper to use as my stencil for the wings. I outlined the inside pieces of wings with mini M&M’s. Then I filled in each wing section.
The eyes and mouth are also mini M&M’s, and pipe cleaner antennae. I used sugar crystals to try to make the wing pieces shimmery, but it didn’t work really well. I would suggest edible glitter. I couldn’t find any in my town.
