This Carousel Birthday Cake is composed of a 10″ round spice cake on the bottom, a 9″ round yellow cake and a Pyrex bowl chocolate cake on top. I put the cake together using ideas from this site.
I purchased Wilton’s carousel cake horses (it comes with two plates to “build” the cake) which I repainted using acrylics and coated with a gloss sealer. I then superglued “jewels” onto the horses for added umph.
The frosting is buttercream. I made the roses a few days in advance – it took a lot of frosting to frost this cake!
I put the cake on a Wilton rotating cake plate used for decorating – it was fun to spin the finished cake (SLOWLY) at the party!
At the party I gave my one-year-old birthday girl her own layered cake simply decorated with white buttercream frosting and sprinkles, along with miniature animal cookies I had frosted with royal icing. She loved having her own cake to mash her hands into, and the guests loved choosing their flavor of cake.
