To make this castle birthday cake I used 3 boxes of white cake mix and 3 boxes of chocolate cake mix. The bottom layer is (2) 12″x12″ square and the top layer is (2) 10″ round. The frosting is a crusting butter cream that I smoothed with a viva paper towel. I purchased the dragon and knight/horse at Michael’s . The door was a graham cracker with a mini M&M. The top layer had red, purple, and white spice drops, the bottom layer had red and white gum drops, and the sides had heart suckers with the stick cut off. The drawbridge was a Kit Kat with red sour strips. In the dragon’s mouth was a Swedish fish for the fire.
To make the towers I took colored ice cream cones and secured two ends with melted white chocolate. The top of the towers is a sugar cone that I frosted by thinning out the frosting and then adding pink crystal sprinkles. The Happy Birthday flags were secured with toothpicks, melted white chocolate, and pink mini marshmallows. The moat was blue jello made with the jiggle recipe. The grass was coconut tinted green. The trees were sugar cones with thinned out frosting and tinted coconut. The road was crumbled graham crackers.
The week before the party I baked the cakes and then froze them. The day before the party I placed the (2) 12″ x 12″ cakes together on a cake board and frosted. I then placed the (2) 10″ round cakes on a cake board and frosted. To stack the cakes I placed 4 cut wooden dowels laying down in a square on top of the 12″x12″ cake and dusted with powdered sugar. I then placed the 10″ round cakes on top. I decorated the castle. The day of the party I placed the moat, grass, dragon, knight/horse, and the trees.
This was the first time I had ever tried to make a stacked cake. It was a lot of fun and now my 2 nephews have requested that I make them castle cakes for their birthdays (boy colors of course).
