Cool Homemade Castle Cake Idea With Tiara

My little princess (my granddaughter) wanted a pink and purple castle for her 5th birthday party, so I set to work on this Castle Cake Idea several days ahead of time. I had seen a number of kits out there but wanted the entire cake to be edible so I decided to make my own.

I used three 9 x 9 square cakes for the base and two 8×8 square cakes for the next layer (I cut about 2 inches off the front of the 8 inch squares and set the smaller cakes toward the back of the first layer. For the four round towers at the corners of the castle, I baked cakes in 4 thoroughly washed soup cans. On top of the round towers I placed upside down wafer ice cream cones that I had frosted. I then placed sugar cones that had been frosted and then rolled in purple colored sugar on top. I put an ice cream cone turret at the top of the cake as well. The two smaller round towers on the top of the base cake were made in tomato paste cans and those were also topped with the purple sugar cones.

I used graham crackers for the door, the windows and the drawbridge. I added a pastel twisted marshmallow rope all around the bottom of the cake and also used that to make the ropes for the draw bridge. I sprinkled purple sugar all over to give it a little sparkle. (I did compromise a little by adding a few non-edible decorative pieces, the jewels on the front of the towers and the crown that I set on top of the cake when it was finished.)
