This was the first novelty cake I have ever made! It is for my son’s 2nd birthday. He is obsessed with cats so had to make him a cat cake.
I used two round vanilla cakes and cut according to directions found on website. I froze the un-iced / uncut cakes prior to cutting and icing. Next time, I will freeze the cake cut, so that the edges can also freeze, and then icing will be easier. I found that the cats head and ears needed leveling.
I used cream cheese and icing sugar for the icing. The CSR chocolate icing mixture made it easy for the chocolate, while the white was just with plain icing sugar. For the pink nose, I just added red food colouring. At first I added milk to the icing, but realized it was way too runny. 2nd batch much better. I used a hot knife and a little water for the final spread which helped it look smoother.
I used Queens Writing fudge – chocolate for the whiskers, eyes, legs etc. The writing was the trickiest, as once it is down, that’s it. Next time I will hopefully be more experienced! A lot easier than anticipated.
