Coolest Cat Cake

Every year, my daughters (currently age 5.5 and 3) choose the theme for their daddy’s birthday cake. This year, they wanted images of our two cats, but that was too ambitious for me, so I talked them into Chococat (a Sanrio character somehow related to Hello Kitty, but I will admit that I’m not sure how I just think he’s cute).

I baked my usual 9″ round yellow butter recipe cake mix layer cake and put down a base layer of Wilton recipe white buttercream. (I really need a refresher course in crumbcoating, but that’s another story.) To create the image on the cat cake, I Googled “Chococat” and picked a nice clear image. The image I chose was a full-body picture, but I chose to use just the head because it fit better on the found cake.

I used a toothpick to sketch the outline of the cat’s head and features. I used a tube of black Wilton pre-made decorator icing with a screw-on star tip to make the cat. (I chose to use the pre-made because black is notoriously difficult to achieve with icing tints at home. And I was feeling lazy. I can admit that.) I switched to a small writing tip for the lettering and whiskers. I used pink right from the tube to make the nose. I skipped the blue collar because I didn’t have blue on hand and didn’t feel like tinting the little bit of buttercream I had left.

And that’s it. If I had more buttercream left, I possibly could have made a beaded star-tip border around the top rim of the cake and the base.

Thanks for looking!
