I should tell you now that this homemade CAT themed cake was for my brother’s 30th birthday! My brother is a truck driver – and loves CAT equipment. He also collects the little CAT figurines so I wanted to incorporate those as well. I could see little tears in his eyes when he saw the cake, but I think that was because he could play with it!
I simply made a chocolate cake in a roasting dish, then I covered it with chocolate icing (with a bit of black food colour added to get it a bit darker). Then came the accessorising (starting from the left):
1. The “logs” and “trees” are chocolate finger biscuits, shredded coconut with green food colour and kremelta. I also put a little icing sugar in the trees to get the green colour to come through.
2. The bulldozer pushing the “rubble” is breakfast cereal, coconut, and mixed nuts all stuck together with kremelta. I pushed this into the corner of a container (so it would look like the digger was pushing it) and left it in the fridge to harden.
3. The digger in the front corner – I made this by simply using a fork (to replicate the digger prongs) to etch out the side of the homemade CAT themed cake.
4. Lastly – the CAT logo – I photocopied the CAT logo to the size I wanted, then traced this onto a rolled out piece of fondant icing. Then painted the logo using food colouring and let it dry.
Happy cake making!
