My daughter has a spring birthday so for her 1st birthday I made this Caterpillar Birthday Cake. We did a garden theme, but after checking out this website I just had to try a caterpillar cake. This cake wasn’t hard, but because it was my first and there was a little bit of a learning curve, it did take a little time for me to figure out how to frost it.
I used 3 cake mixes (lemon, funfetti, white) to make the cake and some cupcakes and used a couple different oven-safe bowls to bake it in. After baking and cooling, I started the frosting process by doing a really thin crumb coat of frosting. Then using buttercream frosting, tinted with a variety of Wilton’s creme dyes, I went to work. Before starting, I sketched out what I wanted each segment to look like.
I used the grass tip to add some grass around the outside and put a few cupcakes around the top that I had outlined some simple flowers on. The face was done with frosting and mini chocolate chips and dum-dum suckers with ribbon were used for the antennae.
It was a HIT and so cute. My daughter even had a whole segment to herself!
