Coolest Cheeseburger Cake

For my boyfriend’s 27th birthday, I decided to take the many ideas I’ve seen from this site, and try my hand at making my own cheeseburger cake. Here are the steps I took in order to create this epic cake:

For the buns, use yellow cake mix and pour one half into a 9″ cake pan and the other half into a large oven-safe mixing bowl (spray cooking spray on the pan and bowl beforehand). Bake for the recommended amount of time and let cool for at least 10 minutes before trying to remove cake from the pan and bowl using a spatula.

For the burger, bake brownies in an 8″ square pan for the recommended amount of time. Let cool for at least 10 minutes, then remove the entire brownie chunk using a spatula. Cut off the corners with a knife so that the brownie chunk is round enough to look like a burger patty, or leave it square for those of you who enjoy square patties.

For the fries, use sugar cookie dough and cut it into thick strips (that look like fries) and bake for the recommended amount of time. As the strips bake, they will flatten and form oval-shaped cookies. Let them cool and cut into french fry strips.

For the condiments, melt white chocolate chips in two microwave-safe bowls (one at a time) on the defrost setting in the microwave for 30 second increments until all of the chips melt. Add food coloring (yellow for the cheese and red for the tomatoes) and stir. For the tomatoes, use a small glass container and pour the red chocolate mixture into it and refrigerate for about 20 minutes. (Make three.)

For the cheese, create a square mold with raised edges using aluminum foil. Pour the yellow chocolate mixture into it and refrigerate for about 20 minutes. (Make five.) For the onion rings, put wax paper on a plate and line up white chocolate chips in a circle (about 2 chips wide on every “side”). Defrost these in the microwave for about 2 minutes, and then use a toothpick in order to join the chips together to form what looks like an onion ring, and refrigerate for about 20 minutes. (Make three.) You can also use fondant for condiments, but I didn’t have any/don’t know how to make it.

For the lettuce, use green frosting and pipe it on using a thin slit frosting tip. For the ketchup, use red frosting and pipe it on using a medium-sized star frosting tip.

For the seeds, gently press sunflower seeds into the top bun. (You can also use Rice Krispies or pumpkin seeds.)

To assemble the burger, place the bottom part of the bun on a cake dish. Coat the top with buttercream frosting. Add two cheese slices and then pipe on some green frosting along the edges. After that, place the burger brownie on top. Then add the remaining three cheese slices, pipe on some more green frosting, and add the tomatoes and onion rings on top. Pipe on some red frosting to look like ketchup, frost the underneath of the top bun with buttercream frosting, and flip it over carefully onto the cake. Gently press sunflower seeds into the top bun. Use the remainder of the buttercream frosting in order to coat the bottom side of each fry as you place it on the cake dish. And to top it all off, pipe red frosting on each fry, and write your optional birthday message on some of the fries.

Note: Due to the fact that it is nearly impossible to cut through layers of hard white chocolate, you will need to destroy your cake by removing most, if not all of the onion rings, tomatoes, and cheese in order to eat it.
