For all of my daughter’s cakes since birth she has chosen Winnie the Pooh, her favorite, but for her 3rd she said she wanted something a little different. She wanted to combine her love of choo choo trains with her love of Pooh, and so we chose to make her a Winnie the Pooh Choo Choo birthday cake.
It was much easier than I anticipated, and it turned out great! I used a train cake pan and simply changed the design colors to match those in the Winnie the Pooh color kit. For each of the train segments I used a mini loaf pan. The wheels on the train’s cars are colored buttons and the tops are all from a toy that she had gotten the year before.
I used a pudding based cake mix because those always work better in a stand up cake pan, they provide minimal sticking and are a heavier cake. I chose to mount the train on a 1/2 sheet cake simply because we were feeding an army, as we always do at our family functions.
I made my first cake for my daughter’s first birthday and have made many since then, but this one is by far my favorite and was truly fun and rewarding to make. The family loved the look and the taste and since then I have become the inside cake decorator for all of our families birthdays.
Your cake looks great! I love how you incorporated the Disney characters with the train theme. I also like how the train is up on the sheet cake. Did you have to put anything under there to support the train, or did it sit fine with no sinking issues?? Thanks so much!
