I am so appreciative of all the train cake ideas I found on this site and wanted to share the results of my research on of a Choo Choo Train Birthday Cake.
Each of the trains were made from a dense devils food recipe. The steam engine is from two bread pans and the rest of the railcars were made from a giant sheet cake that was carved up. I carved the train loosely based on my son’s Thomas trains. The two big wheels are Oreos and the smaller wheels are made from thick cut black marshmallow fondant. The smoke stack is a tootsie roll on a dowel rod covered in the fondant.
It was very easy to mold into the shape I wanted- it was my mom’s idea to use the tootsie roll and it was great! We also used the tootsie roll (quartered) to “link” the railcars together. Also, the red caboose rail’s are simply toothpicks with yarn glued to them. Next time, I will make the toothpicks shorter to be more to scale.
Each of the railcars are topped with candies. The Pez and M&M cars have one solid layer of candy and then I lightly dipped individual candies in icing and then randomly layered to look like they are piled on. The Coal car is a Hershey bar that I froze and then hit on the counter to get the chunky look.
