The little boy I nanny turned three. He is obsessed with all things construction and has a crazy vocabulary about trucks and construction. We are constantly outside “laying foundations” and “building big houses.”
His mother has celiac disease so this cake was completely gluten free. The upper part of the three is a vanilla cake and the bottom part is chocolate. It is covered with chocolate buttercream frosting, vanilla royal icing, and chocolate ganache. Each cake was made in an Angel Food Pan and then cut to make the three. The back of the three was lined with yellow and black stripes made from royal icing in order to make it look like caution tape. The dirt was made with a combination of brown royal icing, Chocolate buttercream and leftover chocolate cake pieces.
Everything on this Construction 3rd Birthday Cake is edible, including the signs, except the trucks which were purchased at Target. The signs, construction cones, hard hat, and letters were made from candy molds. The letters are chocolate and the signs, cones, and hard hat were made from vanilla candy melts.
The board is covered with green royal icing. Then I used a number 233 piping tip to make the texture of the grass.
