Awesome Homemade Construction Birthday Cake

This special construction birthday cake was created for my nephew’s first birthday. It is a two layer half sheet and a two layer 6-inch round white cake with strawberry and banana filling decorated with fondant. The roads were lined with piped butter cream grass.

Two holes were carved into the top layer of the sheet cake to create a rock quarry and a lake. I used blue tinted piping gel to fill in the lake and chocolate rocks purchased from a candy shop to fill the quarry. The extra cake left from leveling the lower layer of cake was used to create a ridge to place the sign and trees. The sign is fondant wrapped over a cardboard form with toothpicks to insert it onto the cake.

The trees are piped butter cream on sugar cones with pretzel rod tree trunks. The bridge was made from a cardboard form wrapped in fondant with piping to define the rocks.
