This Construction cake was my 2nd attempt at cake decorating on this level. We were having a safety luncheon at work and the only dessert on the menu was banana pudding. So I thought I would make a fun cake keeping with the theme of construction safety.
I made a white almond sour cream sheet cake. I dyed butter cream frosting a bright yellow for the base and black for the borders. I made a road and safety cones out of fondant I dyed. I purchased various construction vehicles. I played with the placement of the vehicles on the upturned cake pan so I could decide what extras I needed to add.
I used a clean hack saw blade and cut off the pointy end of two sugar cones. I used a grass tip and covered the cones with green frosting to make pine trees. I used a tiny bit of black gel coloring on white fondant and didn’t blend it all the way to make a marble look for the boulders in the dump truck. What was left I blended into a solid gray to make concrete.
I ordered HO scaled train men with hard hats to place on the cake. The dozer is sitting in crushed chocolate cookies that look like dirt. I used black fondant and letter cutters to make the words. It took some serious searching to find the security gate. Every trade we use complains about the security check point so I wanted to be sure that was represented just for fun.
It was a hit. The cake was placed on display till everyone had filtered through to eat and then was cut at the very end. There was not a single piece left.
This is a very cool cake..good job
