This Converse shoe cake was made by using rectangle cakes, iced, and stacked about four or five high. Then you get a nice serrated knife and start carving. I don’t like templates or cut outs; just do it freehand. Start by taking off only a little at a time to get the shape right.(remember- you can always take more off but you cant put it back on)
So you are basically cutting the shoe shape you need. Then I iced it and covered the entire thing in black fondant. Next you need white fondant cut into thin and even strips to make the laces. I went for the old faithful criss cross pattern. Do a wide strip for the rubber outsole, and a fondant piece for the rubber shell cap. And I brushed the toe cap with a little water to give it that chucks sheen. A little black icing to pipe some accents around the side and the All Star on the back.
Then I used a white fondant circle to do the side piece that displays the star, the name, the writing and the logo.
Put it on a nice cake base and watch them enjoy.
this cake is awesome,, and so realistic! i luv it!
Thank you. Took about eight hours. Wanted to get all the details right so it looked exactly like the chucks and not just a pair of shoes. thanks for commenting
This cake is a masterpiece..A lot of time and love went into every detail…You did a great great job!
This is impressive. My daughter is a dancer and their hip hop routine shoes are converses in green. I wanted to make a cake for the end of year party. Thank you for sharing, it is giving me confidence to try…..wonder if you did any of the detail fondant work ahead of time??
This is the BEST shoe cake I ever seen!!!!
You truly are a artist!!!
Very impressed!
Mark this cake is so cool! I am doing tiered cupcakes and a small wedding cake on the top tier next weekend (May 24, 2009) The Groom and all the groomsmen are wearing Chucks in the wedding and I thought this would be an incredible cake to surprise the groom with s his grooms cake. Did you use regular cake for this or did you use a pound cake for easier carving? Again, AWESOME job.
I love Converse and cake!! to have them both is great. congrats awesome cake
Go with a nice spongy cake. You can use pound cake but don’t really need to. Make it wide enough to support the top. The taller you go, the more structural integrity you lose. Fondant is a must too. Any cake done in a 3d style needs the fondant. It’s just like play do. Knead, roll, cover and trim. They even sell it at Walmart now. Buy some and just practice. It’s pretty easy to use. Happy caking to all
hi, your cake is pure AWESOMNESS !
I’ve decided to try and make it, but I’m confused on how to carve the cake. What shape tin did you use and what shapes did you cut it into?
And, how big was this cake when it was done?
thankyou !
Love your cake. I am making one for June 24 (tomorrow, ah !) How did you do the laces like that? Did you put a hole in the fondant and actually pull the laces through? If so, won’t it rip the fondant? Any help with this would be extremely helpful Mark. Thanks,
don’t try to bother with tins or pans to get the shape. The best way is to just make the cakes in whatever type rectangle pan you have. Make a few cakes and then cut the basic rectangle shape you want (however big). Stack up about five or six of the rectangle layers. You will have a big block essentially. Start from the top and carve down at an angle towards the toe of the shoe. Do a little at a time cause you can always take more off but can never put it back on. Keep carving until you get the basic shoe shape and then round off the edges and corners. Best of luck and keep practicing
Could you please put up the recipe for the cake and if you made the fondant the recipe of that too. Thank you.
do you make and decorate cakes for a living?
My son’s 26th birthday is in November, he loves Jordan’s. I’ve going to try this with one of his shoes. Your Converse shoe gave me all the hope I needed.. Wish me Luck!
