A friend asked me to make her a Cookie Monster cake for her little boy’s 2nd birthday. To make this I baked 4 pound cakes from mixes in 9″ round pans and layered them. I covered them with white fondant. I then used a double batch of rice cereal treat to sculpt cookie monster’s shoulders, head and arms. I colored a batch of buttercream icing blue and piped it onto the cereal treat body with a star tip. His eyes are made of fondant scraps rolled into balls and painted with gel food color. The inside of his mouth was covered with fondant, and painted with gel food color, after I sliced into the head and spread it open.
I had to freeze the rice cereal treats after sculpting to get it to hold its shape, and used wooden skewers to keep it upright and steady. I baked a batch of chocolate chip cookies that I used in his hand and mouth, and also around the outside of the cake for trim. I colored some fondant red and used a stencil and an exacto knife to cut out the letters for his name.
This was my first attempt with sculpting rice cereal treats and am quite proud of the results.
