Cows are my daughter’s favorite animal, so I made her this Cow cake for her third birthday.
I made a chocolate cake using two 9″ round cake pans. One cake was used to form the body of the cow. The head, ears, and legs were cut from the second cake. The trick is, to make the cake look like a cow, to cut the head into a more elongated shape rather than leaving it round. I found that when the head was too round, the cake looked more like a pig.
The ears were cut in oval shapes and the legs were square shapes, just slightly narrower at the top than the bottom.
The frosting was butter cream, with chocolate frosting for the spots. I used a star tip to frost the cake. The eyes, nose, and mouth were chocolate chips, simply because I had them in the house, but any chocolate candy pieces would do.
Overall this cake was pretty easy to make; the hardest part was figuring out the right shape and proportion for the head.
This looks great, I am going to try it for my farm obsessed 2 year old… thanks!
Thank you so much for posting your picture and description of how you made the cake. I followed your directions and made pretty much the exact same cake. It was all worth it to see my 3 year old niece’s face light up when she saw it. :) Very helpful!
Thank you so much for sharing your cake – I made it recently for my son’s 2nd birthday and it was a huge hit!! I made it slightly bigger using a 10″ cake tin, but followed your instructions & pattern exactly and my pic looks the same as yours…………. thank you so much!!!!
I really prefer the way you shaped the cow’s head over all other cow cakes I’ve seen. Nice work!
My son has decided on a cow cake for his 11th birthday. After searching the internet for ideas I found yours. I love it! Can’t wait to get started on this cake. :) Thank you!!
Awesome cake and very easy to make. I used Junior Mints for the eyes and nose holes – worked perfectly!
By far the best cow cake I have seen on my search. I am planning to make a cow for my sons 2nd birthday in a few weeks and will be using your instructions. I love the hint about the head shape and I think thats why yours looks more “cow” like! Thank you and well done x
Hi
I just want to tell you how adorable this cake is and I’m sure it was a great hit. Do you by chance still have the template for the cow’s head/feet? If not how did you do it so perfectly? My friend at work loves cows and this would be awesome to make for her birthday. Thanks so much.
This is such a pretty cake. I made it for my son’s birthday party yesterday, and it came out great! Everyone thought I was extremely talented :). The truth is I had never made anything like this before, and no, I am not that talented in this area. However, the cake did come out beautiful, and it was the centerpiece of a great cow themed party.
I couple of tips for the newbies:
1) do make a trial version before the party, so that you can see what works for you and what doesn’t.
2) I baked 4 round cakes (2 boxes of pre-mix) and used 3 of them: two layers on the bottom and the top layer to make the face, ears and legs.
Thanks again!
THANK YOU! I just made a cake like yours, and it turned out GREAT! Our 2-year-old granddaughter will be delighted at her birthday party tonight.
Looking forward to making this cake for my grandson! Thank you for posting your ideas. God Bless you!
