My husband is a taxidermist and an avid hunter. He loved the idea of a deer cake. I make all my kids birthday cakes and I love to make cake where I have to cut the cake into the image.
I first started with two boxes of cake mix and baked in a 1/2 sheet cake pan. Let it cool, then stuck it in the freezer for a few hours to be hard enough to cut and not fall apart (I do this with all the cakes I make, makes carving the cake so easy). So, I printed out a picture of a deer silhouette I found online. I cut it out to make a template then cut around a 1/2 sheet cake.
I then used chocolate frosting to put a crumb layer and put it back into the freezer to harden up. I then mixed cream cheese frosting in with some chocolate to make the lighter buck skin color. Adding more milk chocolate to make shadows. I used a little black to outline the eyes and make the pupil and mouth. I used the cream cheese frosting to use in the white of eyes and on the chest. Using my gloved finger I just pulled the frosting with my finger to make texture of fur.
Deer fur is sleek and just needed a little. If the frosting would get too soft I would set the cake back in the freezer for a little while so I could keep working with it. This is the second deer cake I made in two weeks. This one was my husband’s 40th Birthday cake and he absolutely loved it.
