My daughter had a fascination with Frank the Combine from Cars. For her 2nd birthday, I created a Frank cake to go along with the Cars Tractor Tippin’ theme. I made a 1/2 sheet cake and iced it with a layer of white frosting tinted a light brown for a “dirt” base as my crumble frosting. Then I iced the cake again with a medium green tint to resemble grass, I purposefully left open spots to make it look worn.
I also took a little bit dark brown icing and smudged it on top for a multi-tone layer effect. I took the brown and edged the whole bottom on the cake. I used some of the green icing with a grass tip to simulate grass patches. The Mater, McQueen, and tipped Tractors were bought at a toy store. Unfortunately, they do not make a Frank the Combine toy except for a very small plastic version in the Cars game.
My husband purchased a scaled metal version of a combine at Hobby Town. A friend painted the eyes on Frank. As this was a fairly heavy metal object I made the cake thick enough that I could sink four metal flower pins into the cake and partially into the white box board prior to first icing the cake in order to support the weight of the combine.
I love this idea! Thanks for posting this!
This is a great idea! I am looking for a frank cake! FYI we found a “frank”. It is part of a tractor tipping race/launcher set sold at Walmart.Thank you for sharing!
Love your cake! Great icing tips, too!
BTW, we found a Frank at our local Target in May. My son was super excited!
