I used these doll cupcakes as an activity for my daughter’s seventh birthday. Each girl got one, and we decorated them together at the party. They took them home later as a party favor. (I made sure to send the doll’s original clothes and shoes home with each child.)
The picture you see is what I did before the party. I then provided powdered sugar butter icing (all different colors) and small candies for them to decorate with.
The cupcakes themselves are yellow cake, and the frosting is a fluffy, egg-white based frosting. I let them dry overnight before having the girls attempt to decorate them. The only thing that is a little tricky is getting the dolls in without their feet going through the bottom, or splitting the cupcake. Make a few extra cupcakes just in case!
What I found the easiest was using a table knife and poking a hole in the top of the cupcake before trying to stick the doll in. Then, I frosted the dolls’ dresses with the doll’s hands UP, and then when I was finished lowered the hands. Oh, and make sure you get dolls with their hair up, or put it up yourself before frosting!
I used Kelly dolls (or at least the generic kind of Kelly dolls). They are just the right size for the cupcakes!
Hello,
I love your idea of making individual doll cakes for each little girl attending the birthday party. I would like to use your idea at my daughter’s 6th Birthday party in May. I am having a difficult time finding the Kelly dolls (real ones or generic). Could you please tell me where you found them?
Thanks!
Shannon
I live overseas, so I found them at the market here and I know that’s no help to you.
You might try amazon.com, or I know Target used to have them a couple years back. Maybe they don’t make them anymore???
Let me know if you find them!
Any party store you can find the dolls. You can also make 1 big cake with a regular Barbie Doll
Do a search on “Kelly Dolls” on Amazon or eBay. I got a lot of 20 new ones on eBay.
Also, what frosting recipe did you use? I figure it has to set somewhat to avoid getting bumped around after you frost them, but not so much that the girls can’t decorate them by pressing sprinkles, candies, etc., into the frosting.
I used something like 7-minute frosting, or “fluffy white frosting” in a Better Homes cookbook. It has been so long ago I don’t remember anymore! It has egg whites in it, and sugar, maybe cream of tartar. BUT, I think it did set (I did them the night before). You can decorate with a simple powdered sugar/water mixture, to use that like glue and stick candy on. (Kind of like you do with gingerbread houses.)
