This is my homemade Dora the Explorer Birthday cake.
I baked two square white cakes for the bottom. I then baked two round cakes for the top. I shaped and frosted each cake and assembled them. I then let them refrigerate for about an hour each. I tinted and rolled the fondant and then added it to my chilled cakes.
I applied the Dora Logo and the premade Dora for the top. All of the decorations were handmade and hand-tinted using gum paste. I only glanced at a printed photo of Dora before cutting each shape out of my tinted gum paste. Ideally, Dora would have been standing up, but the gum paste started to crack so I decided to lay her flat.
For the border between the top and bottom cakes, I took two balls of my tinted fondant, made them into snake shapes and laid them next to each other. I then twisted the fondant, holding it by both ends, and came up with a colorful twirly border.
It was not the best I’ve done, but my niece, and even my grandma, loved it.
