All that my daughter wanted for her 3rd birthday was a homemade Dora the Explorer birthday cake. I purchased a sponge slab from a local shop and decided to decorate it for her. I copied a picture of Dora from a colouring book, and traced it onto baking paper. I purchased plastic icing to cover the cake. To get ‘lilac’ for the background, I played around mixing red & blue food colouring. This was kneaded into the icing very sparingly, as you can always add more, but not remove once you’ve added.
After icing was placed over cake (spreading jam over cake to help icing stick) I then transferred the outline of design on cake using a sharp knife over the baking paper. Dora’s hair was decorated with MILK CHOCOLATE FROSTING. I used the back of bread knife to ‘comb’ the hair. Her face was decorated with CARAMEL TOP ‘n FILL. Her t-shirt was pink food colouring, and to get the white for the eyes, I made up icing with egg white.
I put Smarties on each eye and used a black decorating gel pen for the outline (purchased from a craft shop). Overall I was very happy, my birthday girl was over the moon, and everyone was impressed. Just very labour intensive mixing the plastic icing colour and kneading it through, ensuring it does not dry out. I had a girlfriend help me with that part, which was fantastic.
