I made this cake for my 3 year old daughter’s Dora themed party. I used a Wilton shaped cake pan (the tin came with full instructions for decorating), a banana cake recipe, and then totally winged it with the colouring of the buttercream icing as I didn’t have the “Dora” colour set. I knew I was taking on a big job before I started decorating this cake, but the hours (about 4 and a half, including making and colouring all of the icing)spent on it, and the aching hand after all that piping were totally worth it when I saw the look on the birthday girl’s face after the cake was revealed! I am not a professional cake maker or decorator, but this was not my first time decorating such an involved design, so while it wasn’t a surprise to me that it took so long to complete, a first time decorator could find it quite daunting. Oh, and not only did it look great, but it tasted awesome too! I used some tips and tricks from the Wilton website to get everything just right, and recommend it as a good resource when working with buttercream icing.

Hi, I don’t use cake mixes, but for this cake I think I used a really easy banana cake recipe. Gently melt 100g butter, take off heat and add 1 cup sugar, 2 eggs and 2 teaspoons vanilla essence. Beat until smooth. Sift in 2 cups flour, 2 tsp baking powder, add 1 cup milk and 2 ripe mashed bananas. Beat lightly til just mixed. Bake at 180 degrees C for about 40 mins (I use a fan bake oven).
