I looked through the dragon cakes here to get ideas for how to make mine. I used the basic construction that a lot of people did, baking two 9″ circles. One of the circles I cut in half and placed with the cut edges on my foil covered board. This was the main body.
I cut out a curving tail, two haunches, and a wedge for the face. Some small bumps made the nostrils. I gave everything a crumb coat, let it harden up, then lavishly frosted with blue frosting.
I used Famous Wafers for the spikes, piping yellow dots on them. The eyes are made out of marshmallow and Swedish Fish, and the toenails are also marshmallows.
I used a candy making recipe to make the wings and flames. I loved the way they came out. Note-The hard sugar wings were heavy, so I only put them in right before bringing out the cake. The flames came out of the dragon’s mouth and candles went into his nostrils.
Finally, I tucked a pile of gold wrapped chocolate coins into the curve of his tail for him to guard. This Dragon Birthday Cake was a huge hit and probably my favorite one I’ve made!
