I made this Homemade Dragon Birthday Cake Design in February for a good friend. Her birthday was just before the Chinese new year, and she didn’t want the same old Valentine’s theme, so we thought we’d try something new!
The cake was prepared in the Wilton Tasty Fill Pan. The cake was chocolate and the filling was vanilla ice cream. For the design, the internet was my biggest friend! I looked up how to say Happy Birthday in Chinese (to explain the characters on top). I also printed off a picture of a Chinese dragon that was my basis for the top.
I made the dragon by first outlining his limbs and main body (minus the head) with a large star tip, just for a starting point. I then tried to build his head to be standing up, which didn’t work (I’m thinking not stiff enough icing). But, between constantly cooling the icing and a lot of determination I got his head sculpted. I then used a small rose tip to create his scales, starting at the tail and toes and working up.
All that was left were the details of eyes, horns etc. The designs on the side were actually from the designs on the hats that were bought for the party itself. A bit of work (and a mess as you can see from the pics), but it was a very fun cake to create, and the birthday girl was very satisfied!
Your cake looks amazing! I love all the detail and how you were able to make the dragon standing up. The side design definitely topped it off.
