My 7 year old is all about dragons, so for his birthday (at the last minute) I decided to give it a try. I got most of my ideas for a dragon cake off of this site. There are some fabulous creations on here.
I made 2 8″ round cakes and a 9 x 13 cake so I had plenty to work with. I did have plenty left over. I am also including a photo of the cake before it was frosted that shows the pieces I cut out. The only piece not on that picture is a cylinder I cut out that went on top of the head for the the brow ridge/eyes.
The scales, front feet, eyebrows, nostril holes, and the end of the tail are all made from a homemade fondant recipe that I got off of this site. I also rolled out a piece of the fondant and put it over the top of that cylinder on the head because it was too hard to frost. The claws on the back feet are candy corn cut in half.
I used some Wilton Color Mist food coloring spray and black shiny cake sparkles on the back of the dragon. The wings are fruit roll-ups with a straw sandwiched in the middle. I put them in at the last minute but they were very light and had no trouble staying put.
The wings themselves were still floppy though. I think it would have been better to keep the fruit roll-up plastic on the inside piece to help it keep it’s shape.
Nice cake, showing the cake unfrosted is very helpful. thumbs up
I love that you made this with standard cake shapes cut up! I am impresses and inspired!
