I made this Dump Truck Birthday Cake for my son’s 3rd birthday. I got the idea from a Wilton Fondant Yearbook. We used blue and grey to match my husband’s flat bed truck. To make the truck I covered a Styrofoam block with foil to raise the cake.
For the truck body, I baked chocolate cake in 2 loaf pans. I stacked the cakes with icing between and froze them for about 2 hours. Then I cut and shaped the cakes to make the basic truck shape. I then covered the cake in a thin layer of buttercream.
The blue and grey icing are homemade marshmallow fondant, rolled and cut to the shape needed to cover the cake. The tires are also marshmallow fondant. A little water will allow you to “glue” one fondant piece to another.
Although not seen here, to finish the cake, I crumbled chocolate cake into the back of the truck and behind it to look like it was dumping dirt! I also added my son’s name to the tailgate to look like the manufacturer’s name.
Wow! This cake is soo cute. You did a great job! Who ever gave you the idea for marshmallow fondant?
