This Elmo Birthday Cake was made by my sister and I for a friend’s daughter’s first birthday. She had requested that baby Elmo and the number one be on top and that the cake was made out of a chocolate and white chocolate marble mud cake but otherwise we were free to design the rest ourselves.
After surfing the net and looking at hundreds of cake photos we came up with this design and we love it! We found a simple Marble mudcake recipe online and doubled the mixture to fit a 10 inch square cake tin. This is the link to the recipe we used http://au.lifestyle.yahoo.com/b/new-idea/914/triple-choc-marbled-mud-cake/
We had to bake the cake for 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Once cooled we smothered the top and sides of the cake with a basic buttercream icing which gave us a perfect surface to lay out the ready to roll pastel pink fondant on. We rubbed the fondant gently to smooth it down the corners and out any bumps before beginning to roll hot pink and yellow fondant into balls about the size of a 5 cent piece.
The letters were cut out of hot pink fondant and then brushed with a little water before being sprinkled with edible hologram glitter. The stars were also made out of yellow and pink fondant and Elmo was made out of fondant that we cut out using a home made template. All the fondant shapes were secured to the cake using a little bit for water.
We were both very surprised with how well it turned out and although it took a full day of cooking and decorating we think the end result is well worth it!
I love it, so adorable!

I think you and your sister did an absolute fantastic job on this cake! I was just wondering what ‘homemade’ template you used for the Baby Elmo cut-out? I would have loved to known how to do this for my son’s birthday I just did! Thanks so much for your time!
You two did a fantastic job on the cake! Two questions: where can I get a copy of the template that you used for Elmo? I would like to use it for my niece when I make her 1st birthday cake. My other question: Since you smothered the buttercream icing on the cake and then put on the fondant, did you remove the fondant before serving so people just enjoyed the buttercream icing? Does the fondant remove easily? Thank you for help!
Hi everyone who asked about a template for Elmo. We actually just Googled ‘Baby Elmo’ and printed off a picture we liked which we then traced onto Baking paper. This gave us something to lye over the coloured fondant to cut out with a sharp knife.
