This Elmo Birthday Cake was a chocolate box cake and homemade chocolate frosting inside. All the piping on the outside was done using store bought frosting dyed the colors I wanted.
I covered the cake with fondant. I am still learning how to use fondant. I have been having problems with it cracking on the edges. So I am getting really good at covering it up. The bottom border is just rolled balls of fondant. All the decorations, such as the Elmo crayons and Sesame Street sign with name in it, were done using an exacto knife and fondant. I used a tip #3 with the colored frosting.
I cut Elmo out in fondant freehand and then painted it with color gel. Red frosting is SO hard to make in frosting so I decided to spare the trouble and just paint the fondant. To stick the fondant on the cake I used a paint brush and water and it sticks right on. I think this was my favorite cake yet.
