I made this Elmo cake for my son’s 2nd birthday. It was my first attempt at a character cake, and it was a lot of fun. The cake is a 2-layer, 12 inch square, and required about 10 cups of batter per layer, and baked 55 minutes each. I used Betty Crocker pudding in the mix, Butter yellow, and I made vanilla buttercream for the frosting.
I used a picture of Elmo and traced the shape of it with a toothpick once the frosting crusted over. The details I added freehand with the icing. Then I used candy star sprinkles to place in and around his hands for the confetti, and I continued them down the front sides of the cake.
My son loved his cake! Thanks to this site for the inspiration!
