A friend’s 5 year old daughter wanted Fairy Cupcakes so we decided to go with a Fairy Garden theme. After scouring the internet for topper ideas – I made all of these cake toppers with fondant, except the fairies. I bought those from Woolworth’s as it just seemed too hard to make them myself.
I didn’t put hardening powder in any of the decorations except the ‘slab’ so the little girl could have a keepsake of her birthday. I wanted the kids at the party to be able to eat everything on the cupcakes so the parents wouldn’t have to worry about what was OK to eat and what wasn’t.
I made all the decorations a few weeks in advance so they would have time to dry and then all I had to do the day before was make vanilla cupcakes with green icing. I waited until the morning of the party to put the decorations on as the butter cream icing can make the decorations go a bit soft if the moisture starts to be absorbed.
Because of this I also made a lot of the decorations ‘on’ something so they wouldn’t be touching the icing themselves ie: the caterpillars and ladybugs were on fondant leaves (hard to see them as they are the same colour as the icing), the butterflies were on little fondant flowers and the toadstools had toothpicks through them so I could put the toothpick into the cupcake to hold them in place.
The kids loved these Homemade Fairy Garden Cupcakes – thank goodness!
