I made this Farmyard Birthday Cake Idea for a friend who’s little boy was turning two years old. It was my first time to use marshmallow fondant. Once I learned to cover my hands with JUST A DAB of Crisco, the fondant was a fun challenge. The frosting is buttercream and chocolate buttercream. The barn is rice krispie treats and graham crackers, I melted marshmallows for the glue.
The barn and cow are sitting on pretzel rods. I wanted everything to be edible. I used a large marshmallow covered with buttercream frosting for the hay stack and a green bush (behind the barn). The animals, eggs, rocks, butterfly(on the sign) and carrots are marshmallow fondant. The sign is a graham cracker covered in melted white chocolate, supported with pretzel rods. I thinned one batch of frosting with Karo syrup for the mud, pond water and light green frosting used to frost the cake.
It was a lot of work, but a lot of fun. I am very happy with the results. My biggest challenge was keeping my own two year old away from the animals while they were drying.
That is so cute!! I love the ducks in the water..
