Coolest Firefighter Flame Cake

This cake was not technically a birthday cake, but it was still very appreciated by my husband and his fellow firefighters! I wanted to experiment with a fondant recipe so I created a fun cake for the guys at the station. The helmet has their station number. This cake was 1 box chocolate cake mix with chocolate fudge frosting as the filling. I iced it in buttercream and covered it in marshmallow fondant. Both the buttercream and fondant recipes are from the Wilton website. They are easy recipes to follow and the icing and fondant work very well. They taste great too. The flames are purchased red fondant and yellow decorator icing. I used an exacto-knife to cutout the flames. I used a dampened paper towel to brush a little moisture onto the back of the flames and they attached with no problem. It is important that the fondant not become soggy or it will lose shape and the color will run everywhere. I made the marshmallow fondant the night before and allowed it to set up in the refrigerator. It was very hard and difficult to knead the next day so I microwaved it for about 20 seconds creating enough warmth to get me started. It worked perfectly then and created a professional and clean look. I don’t like the taste of package fondant, but this was surprisingly yummy. It tasted like marshmallow flavored taffy and it is now the fondant recipe I use! The firefighters loved the cake!
