I made this Flip Flops Birthday Cake for our babysitter who turned 14. She asked for a flip flop cake after seeing my daughter’s t-shirt. I had freedom to do as I wished so I did my own rendering. I was really short on time so I kind of threw it together.
First I used 2 box mixes of regular white cake in an 11X15 pan. After cooling I popped it onto a cake board, wrapped it, and put it in the freezer for a couple of days. I printed a flip-flop out from clip-art on my computer and used that as a template to cut out the shape when the cake was frozen.
I used 2 boxes of Wilton whipped frosting and colored it with Wilton gel coloring. I covered the board with a little bit of white frosting and crumbled graham crackers on it. I decorated each cake on wax paper and transferred them to the board one at a time. On the pink and yellow ones, I dipped a cookie cutter in colored sugar to add a little fun.
The straps of the flip-flops were just fruit roll up treats. I think they were fruit by the foot. I cut one end on an angle and stuck it to another piece. The other ends were rounded off. They didn’t work as well as I would have liked as they flopped a bit but they were the best I could come up with at the time.
It turned out super cute and everyone seemed happy with it.
So cute! I love the added details to the flip flops and the fruit roll-ups worked perfectly!
the straps was what made me look at the cake, I really liked the way they kind of flopped
