I made this flower box cake for a friend who is an avid gardener.
First, to make the window box, I baked a cake in a loaf pan. I used the whole cake mix but I probably didn’t need to. It expanded up out of the pan, this was fine, I just cut off the excess. You will need to adjust the baking time for the cake.
I then did a crumb coat in chocolate buttercream. Along the sides of the cake, I did basketweaving (my first attempt, there are good demo videos on youtube). For the soil on the top, I used crushed Oreo cookies.
I added flowers and butterflies (a favourite of the birthday girl) made of gingerbread cookies baked on sticks (which you can likely find at any baking supply store). I wasn’t thrilled with how the flowers turned out. I’d probably do sugar cookies and completely cover them with icing next time.
I had bought some flower candles before I finalized my decision on what cake to make so I decided to add some cupcakes. They were iced in chocolate butter cream and sprinkled with crushed Oreos.
