Coolest Football Cake

I made this football cake for my best friend’s son’s birthday. The bottom piece is a half sheet made of vanilla and chocolate. I covered it with home made green fondant. I baked the football in a Wilton football pan. I covered it with fondant and used the small round frosting tip to add the little blemishes all over the football to make it look real.

My husband made the laces with fondant and we painted the emblem. They do not sell gold paint in York Pennsylvania, so we took edible gold dust and added lemon drops to it. I’ve seen this on a cooking show to do that one time. Both names were cut out with an exacto knife by hand out of fondant.

The patriot head was a printed out of my head. It was 1 in the morning and my husband and I were tired. So we just added the helmet. We were planning to do it with fondant though. The lines were measured out with a ruler and piped on.

I found a very good recipe for fondant. Grease a bowl with crisco, fill it with 1 1/2 bags of mini marshmallows. Drizzle 2 tbs of water over it and then microwave for about a minute. Stir with a greased spoon. You will need a total of 5 cups of confectioners sugar. Add 3/4c. Stir well. Then, using dough attachments on you mixer(greased well) blend in the rest of the sugar. It will still be sticky a lot. You have to stop and push off the fondant sometimes.

Grease a cookie sheet or whatever you use to roll out dough and stuff like that. Grease it good. Then put the crisco on your hands (you may need to do that a couple times). Put the glob on the sheet and knead it. Grease a ziplock bag. Put the ball in the bag and make sure you push out all the air. Refrigerate over night. It is ready the next day.

It will be hard at first to work with. You got to let it come down to room temp. I like this so much better then the store bought stuff.
