I made this gift box cake for a friend’s wedding shower. It is made from regular Duncan Hines Butter recipe cake mixes which I baked in three 9-inch square pans (making it a triple layer cake). I then frosted with homemade buttercream frosting.
I colored 1 box of prepared fondant brown using Wilton icing gel colors – it takes a lot of brown to turn white fondant a pretty dark chocolate color. I made the loops for the bow a day in advance which is a must unless you want them to droop after an hour. I used a combination of 3 Wilton icing colors to turn 2 boxes of white fondant the sage green color. This was very tricky, the colors were ivory, teal and Kelly green. Tip: try mixing your colors into a cornstarch paste first to get the color combination right. I then rolled the fondant in a large square to cover the entire cake, trimmed the excess and assembled the bow using water to help the loops stick.
It was a big hit!
This cake recipe was so cool, not to mention the beautiful presentation, that I dropped everything and tried it. Alas, my result was nowhere as spectacular. It is now apparent to me that the skill of the chef and her (certainly not his!) artistic ability is crucial but I do plan to try again.
