The Groom caught a 42 inch salmon on the day the wedding was announced, so it was an easy theme for a surprise Groom’s cake. The fish is made of Rice Krispie treats and covered in fondant. I found some great ideas from other contributors on this site… thanks so much!
I used a cheese grater to make the scales and painted with silver petal dust mixed with clear spirits. Airbrushing would also work here, but my airbrush compressor was on the fritz so I hand painted instead.
The fish is painted with petal dusts and gel food colors. The fins are made of gumpaste and painted with gel colors and petal dust. The fish is propped up on wooden dowels inserted into the base cake. The seaweed is gumpaste painted with gel colors and the sign is also gumpaste painted with gel colors and attached to a wooden dowel inserted into the base cake. The water effect on the base cake is blue gel food color mixed with clear pipping gel spread over tinted buttercream, I piped it on and then spread it with a small paint brush. The sand is brown sugar and graham cracker crumbs.
