Coolest Guitar Birthday Cake

I was asked to make a Guitar Birthday Cake. It was for a lad’s 21st birthday and had to be pink! The cake was made from a 12″ square, 2 layers chocolate sponge. Once filled I allowed the cake to go firm in the fridge then using a template I cut round to make the body of the guitar.

I used butter icing to smooth all the rough edges and to give a crisp finish for the fondant to attach to. I baked another 12″ cake and cut it into pieces to make the neck and the end. Using white fondant I first covered the large body part. The fondant did tear around the fiddly parts but I was able to patch those and smooth them.

Again with white fondant I covered the neck and head of the guitar, then stuck the 2 parts together. I made the board from layers of strong card and foam core, but I hadn’t realized how heavy a 34″ long cake was going to be. My husband had to reinforce the board with lengths of wood!!

For the decoration, I hand painted the whole cake with food colouring. I mixed colours with luster dust to give richer colours. I tried lots of ideas on how to make strings but everything made the cake loose its neatness. I knew I wouldn’t be able to pipe a clean neat line either so in the end decided to leave the strings off.

I was really pleased with this cake, turned out so much better than I had hoped. The size was not far off a full size guitar and the couple who brought it were over the moon, they didn’t even notice it hadn’t got strings!!
