I made this Handbag Cake for my friend who loved handbags. I made 3 10″ round sponge cakes, cut a portion from the top to give it some shape then jam and butter creamed them together onto a 13″ round cakeboard. I then put them in the fridge to harden a little about half an hour. I then put a large spatula underneath the cake and lifted it to stand up. I then rolled out about a kilo of white fondant and lifted it onto a large rolling pin and laid it over the cake and smoothed it into position cutting off the excess with a sharp knife.
I then made the flap of the handbag cakeand placed it over the top of the handbag. I made the handles from petal paste and put them over an oval tin until they were nearly set then placed them into position on top of the cake and let them form a shape with a little bit of help. I then rolled out some black fondant and placed a strip around the flap and the base of the cake. I used a knitting needle to make stitch marks on the edging of the flap. I then rolled out the left over fondant and scrunched it by putting a knitting needle underneath it and carefully putting in some folds, then placed it around the cake board.
I then rolled out some black petal paste and used alphabet cutters and flower cutters to cut out the writing and decoration which I stuck on with some confectioners glue, but cooled boiled water will work just as well. I bought some black feathers rolled up a ball of icing and placed the feathers onto the board.
It was so fun making this handbag cake and the complements didn’t stop all night!
