This Happy Birthday Jesus Cake is 2 8-in cakes covered in almond buttercream. I made the figures out of gumpaste, and the presents are also gumpaste which I let dry overnight. I used edible markers to decorate the presents. Graham crackers make up the manger and the “sand”. The figures are actually really easy to create, once you color the gumpaste.
The bodies are just rolled and shaped into blobs, and the heads are, of course, circles. Then I used a toothpick to make the eyes and noses. I rolled out a piece of fondant for the headcovering, and stuck a toothpick through the bottom of the figures and then into the cake.
Joseph took a head dive once into the “Happy”, so I learned my lesson and anchored them down! The graham crackers are just glued to together with buttercream and let dry overnight. Enjoy! Gumpaste is fun to work with – think back to when you were 4 playing with playdough.
What a beautiful cake! I’ve been looking for ideas for awhile and I think I’ll give yours a try! Merry Christmas!
