When my friend told me she didn’t know what to do about her son’s dinosaur themed birthday I immediately offered my love of cake making. I spent a couple evenings browsing “dinosaur cake” on Google and checked out some animated dinosaurs online as well to get some inspiration. The finished product turned out to be a happy dinosaur, with a huge white smile and barney like spots down his back.
I started my construction of this Happy Dinosaur Birthday Cake by making a batch of rice krispie treats. While still warm, I molded the dinosaur’s head (complete with eye sockets and nose holes), his arms, his legs and the bottom part of his tail. I then proceeded to make a white cake and separated the batter a few different ways.
For the dinosaur’s body I used two Pyrex bowls (oven proof) and stacked the cakes on top of each other. I then used to the rest of the batter to make cupcakes for the party. I stacked the two bowls of cake on top of each other and iced them with a homemade buttercream. I actually covered the head, arms and legs with fondant before attaching them to the body (which I also covered with fondant). I then attached the head, arms and legs where need be with toothpicks to make sure they stayed in place.
I made the eyes and teeth out of fondant and attached those with some icing.
